“What lies before us and what lies behind us are small matters compared to what lies within us. And when we bring what is within out into the world miracles happen.” Henry David Thoreau
Wouldn’t it be great if we were born running down our path to success, just naturally taking all the right steps? Full of passion and absolute in our purpose. Doing all the right things at the right time. Making all the right choices and all the best decisions. Knew everything we should do and without fail just did it. Born with the knowledge of each vital behavior needed to reach our full potential. Consistent and methodical in developing the vital behaviors to become the unique individual we were capable of becoming.
That would be great. But it seldom happens. Life is a process of learning. That is part of the glory of life itself.
As you learn, you achieve, you get better, you understand, you grow. And it continues throughout every productive life experience. With each failure and each success. As you acknowledge your talents, gifts and God-given abilities you begin to move toward your unique purpose with an appreciation of yourself and empathy for others…bringing new levels of clarity, serenity and compassion.
As we have studied the science of human potential a curious fundamental is described in the stages of learning theory. As learners we begin at a stage termed “unconsciously incompetent”. Wow! That means before we learn something of value, something that can impact how we view and respond to the world, we typically are totally unaware of the existence of that important information.
Unconscious. Incompetent.
As learners, behavioral scientist have shown us that we tend to:
- Begin at Stage 1: Unconscious Incompetence.
(Simply see no need for learning)
- Then we pass through Stage 2: Conscious Incompetence.
(Aware of need or benefit but not yet developed)
- Then through Stage 3: Conscious Competence.
(Aware, practicing and skilled)
- And, ideally end at Stage 4: Unconscious Competence.
(Second Nature, capable of teaching and mentoring others)
At Stage 1: ‘Unconscious Incompetence’ we are in nowhere land. Don’t know what we don’t know and have no reason to find out.
For example, if you were at a stage of ‘unconscious incompetence’ as it relates to developing a personal mission statement for your life, that would mean that you were not aware of the need, importance or value a mission statement held. You would not have an understanding that your mission statement brings clarity to the achievements you wish to pursue or the values you intend to live by. You would be totally unaware of the existence of that important information. Not conscious and certainly not competent.
At Vital Leadership we attempt to help you move from the shadow of unconsciousness. We attempt to shine a light on the vital behaviors that mark the pathway to reach your potential. We try to help you reach a point of consciousness concerning the behaviors that have proven to be effective and of value. Only after consciousness…then your competence comes next with learning, skill development and practice. You begin to develop competence only after YOU recognize the relevance and value of vital behaviors. As your competence increases you are able to come closer to your unique purpose and passion.
That’s why we are dedicated to teaching vital behaviors. To help young adults become ‘consciously competent’. We attempt to help you in understanding your personal values, embrace your unique gifts, assess and develop your strengths, establish your mission statement, set realistic obtainable goals, learn effective communication skills, develop your relational intelligence and become an effective leader and influencer.
We believe everyone is born with passions, gifts and talents unique to them. Our passion is encouraging your personal excellence.
